Change is not something that people around here do well. Small towns like ours resist anything that makes us uncomfortable and we cling to the old ways of doing things. This obvious revelation few months ago made me angry, I was mad at the fact that I've worked so hard in this town and there seemed to be no one else who wanted to work . I was mad at the fact that the way things look if i was ever going to make any type of money in this industry I was going to have to move. I had even contemplated selling my business and working for someone else. Then my dad said something to me that changed my thinking. He said 'Taylor you're no good to anyone anymore, you've worked for yourself for too long." He was right . Then I thought about the stylists in my life who have helped me to where i am today and clientele that they've built , and I realized , you can make as much money here as anywhere else. I just needed to stop whining and get to work. So I changed my thoughts on being a stylist in Albemarle. I stopped worrying about competition and started building up other stylist in the area. Albemarle is a big enough place for everyone here to have a successful business. Then I decided if I wanted stylists who wanted to work I needed to go to the source, The cosmetology school. So I begin working on a placement program with the college where salons in the area can come together and give the students a realistic look at what salon owners expect when they start in the real world. I have a few salons that are participating but I am looking for more. Together we can change the hairstylist community in Albemarle to be a more supportive one!
